Requests for Alternative Formats

We’re here to help remove barriers in finding and using library materials. Whether you need course materials in alternate formats, help navigating the catalogue with assistive technology, or accessible audiovisual content, we want to provide accessible services for every library user.

Eligibility for alternative format requests

Students

We strongly recommend students at the St. George downtown campus, register with the accessibility office before contacting us. Your accessibility advisor will help coordinate the support you need—including library services. Once referred, you can work with us directly for as long as you remain registered.

Faculty and staff

Faculty and staff may receive a referral through U of T’s Health & Well-being Programs and Services. Please refer to the Accommodation Guidelines for Employees with Disabilities for full details.

Community members

If you are a member of the public, please contact us directly with any accommodation requests. These are assessed case by case.

Services available for eligible users

Print conversion

If you have a print disability, we can convert materials such as books, chapters, or assigned readings into accessible formats. After confirming eligibility, simply let us know what you need and in what format. Please note that some conversions may take several days to complete.

Accessible Content E-Portal (ACE)

ACE gives eligible users access to more than 24,000 digitized books in multiple accessible formats. To use ACE, you’ll need a token, which is issued once your eligibility has been confirmed.

HathiTrust Accessible Text Request Service

Students and faculty who are blind or print-disabled can request access to screen-readable PDFs from the full HathiTrust Digital Library collection, including books still under copyright. We will help facilitate access once you are registered through the eligibility process.

Captioning and described video

If library-owned audiovisual content (e.g., DVDs, Blu-rays, streaming video) lacks captions or transcripts, we will provide them upon request. Instructors using personal course materials are also required to ensure captioning is available. We can offer support and guidance for that process.

Web accessibility and alternate digital formats

We work to ensure all library websites, digital catalogues, and online resources meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA standards and AODA requirements. If you encounter any inaccessible content on our site or on third-party platforms (e.g., databases or e-book providers), please let us know. We will contact the vendor and offer workarounds when needed.
